About Galway

County Galway, in the west of Ireland, is an area of stunning scenery, framed by the sea all along the Wild Atlantic Way, and the craggy peaks of the Twelve Bens rising high above the purple hills, bog lands, and lakes of Connemara.

Its eastern areas feature rolling farmland plains and to the west are the raised bog, heathered hills, lakes, and mountains of Connemara. Crossed by trails, Connemara National Park has prehistoric megalithic tombs. The park shelters a herd of Connemara ponies, as well as rich birdlife.

Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, have been luring fishermen for generations for fishing and angling holidays. Artists and photographers are drawn by the constantly changing landscape and light. The vibrant academic city of Galway is in stark contrast to the breathtaking natural beauty of the Galway countryside.

County Galway is famous for its arts and cultural heritage, festivals, restaurants, and lively pubs – a much-loved holiday destination for families or groups.

Galway City, a harbour city on Ireland’s west coast, sits where the River Corrib meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s hub is 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular meeting spot surrounded by shops and traditional pubs that often offer live Irish folk music. Nearby, stone-clad cafes, boutiques, and art galleries line the winding lanes of the Latin Quarter, which retains portions of the medieval city walls.

There is always something happening in Galway no matter what the season. In July the city hosts a Film & Arts Festival and the famous Galway Races. Visits to the Aran Islands bring the Celtic traditions of the West to life, easily done by ferry or plane from Rossaveal or Inverin.

Families and groups will love the choice of holiday destinations such as Ballyconneely, Oranmore, Roundstone, Clifden and Connemara, all offering different types of holidays, all with their own charm.
