Hold a Baby Lamb on Aedán O’Huallacháin Unique Sheep Farm on the Dingle Peninsula
Hold a Baby Lamb on Aedán O’Huallacháin Unique Sheep Farm on the Dingle Peninsula
If you head west from the colourful town of Dingle along the R559, or the famous Slea Head Drive you will come across Aedán O’Huallacháin Sheep Farm. This scenic hillside farm is home to the amazing Beehive Huts or for a unique experience you could even get to Hold a Baby Lamb!
I chatted to Aedán earlier this week to learn about this unique sheep farm and his wonderful visitors’ attraction on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry.
Aedán tell me a little bit about your sheep farm?
Our sheep farm is situated about 13km west of Dingle town, on the Wild Atlantic Way. The farm is just across from the Ceann Sléibhe/Slea Head Discovery Point, where free parking is available. There is so much to do and enjoy during a stay on the Dingle Peninsula but a visit to my farm is one attraction you certainly don’t want to miss.
What is so unique about your farm?
At our sheep farm on Slea Head Drive you could get to Hold a Baby Lamb or see the spectacular Beehive Huts. If you can drag yourself away from the magnificent views across to the Skellig and Blasket islands, and across Dingle Bay to the Iveragh Peninsula, you will be well rewarded. Visitors have the opportunity to see bottle-fed lambs and if they are lucky, they might arrive at feeding time, when they can have a go themselves!
There are also beehive huts on our farm, called Clocháin in the Irish language, which is spoken still by many in the area. These are house sites and were built about 1000 years ago, where the ancestors of today’s farmers would have once lived. These amazing structures are built using the corbelling technique, a style that goes back to the Neolithic tomb at Newgrange in County Meath.
Star Wars fans might recognise these amazing structures as they are very similar to those seen on Skellig Michael where part of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi were part filmed. They are similar in style to the buildings on Skellig Michael – but much easier to get to!
Tell me a little about your sheepdog demonstrations?
Sheepdog Trials or working demonstrations can be organised too. For a memorable experience, see our beloved sheepdog carry out this work on our hillside farm on the Dingle Peninsula with ease and skill.
And if you are very lucky, there might even be a few puppies around the place but unfortunately, they grow up too fast, so they are not always here.
The Old Farmhouse sounds really interesting?
The Old Farmhouse is home to a small café where you can enjoy homemade fruit cake and freshly-brewed coffee. Enjoy speculator views from our outdoor seating area where you can often see pods of dolphins and porpoises passing by.
The Old Farmhouse was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century, visitors to the house have included film star Tom Cruise – some of the scenes from one of his early films, Far and Away, were shot on this farm.
Aedán is looking forward to welcoming you to his unique hillside sheep farm on the glorious Dingle Peninsula – sure to provide a truly memorable experience on your next holiday in County Kerry. And of course if you are looking for a self catering holiday home in Dingle then Trident Holiday Homes have some beautiful properties available.
