Portumna Castle & Gardens

When returning your bike to Portumna, take the opportunity to visit the Portumna Castle & Gardens. The 4th Earl of Clanricarde, Richard de Burgo, began construction on Portumna Castle in 1618. The castle served as the de Burgo family’s residence for 200 years. The Castle and Grounds have recently undergone restoration, and the first floor of the building now has an exhibition and informative panels outlining its history.

The Castle walled gardens are designed as a typical kitchen garden for the “great house,” and when the season is right, you can see (and taste) some amazing fruit there. In the formal gardens, there are towering lawns and geometrically striking gravel paths.
