Valentia Island lies off the coast of the Iveragh Peninsula in southern Kerry in the south of Ireland. It is accessible from the mainland by land bridge at Portmagee or ferry from Renard Point. Approx. 11Km long and 3Km wide the scenic island of Valentia is one of the most westerly points of Europe. It is known for its rich wildlife and so is a great favourite with walkers, birdwatchers and nature lovers. There are a number of marked walks and cycle trails on the island and some stunning views to be enjoyed from Geokaun - the highest mountain on Valentia. From this at 888 feet high peak you can see the Skellig Islands to the south, the Blasket Islands to the north the McGillycuddy Reeks on the mainland.
The island's numerous sandy coves all round a very scenic coastline make it a popular family holiday destination. The island also has an outdoor activity centre– Dive Valentia, who offer kayaking, sailing, power boating, scuba diving, rock climbing and abseiling. There are sea angling charters available from Knightstown.
Valentia Island has a number of local visitor attractions. These include The Tinnies, the Old Slate Quarry (recently reopened for use), the 6th century monastic settlement onSkellig Rocks and and the Skellig Experience Centre which is based on the island. This interactive experience tells the story of the Early Christian monks who settled the Skellig Rock and provides information on the extensive birdlife currently inhabiting the rocks. The easy accessibility of Kerry’s mainland makes day trips to ‘The Ring of Kerry’, Lakes of Killarney, Killarney National Park, Derrynane House (ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell) and the many fishing villages along the coast easy.
