Clew Bay is situated on Ireland’s west coast in Co. Mayo. According to legend, Clew Bay contains an island for every day of the year. Indeed it is said to be home to Ireland’s best example of sunken drumlins, elongated ridges formed by glacial action which form the many little islands which fill the bay.
There are a number of boat trips available, taking visitors out to the principle islands during the summer season with the ferry for Clare Island the largest in the bay leaving from Roonagh Quay, Louisberg between 3 – 4 times a day.
There are a number of seaside towns and villages along the coast of Clew Bay ranging from the larger Westport and Newport to the smaller Louisburgh, Murrisk and Mulranny, the gateway to Achill Island situated on the isthmus between Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay. The bay also boasts some lovely sandy beaches such as Mulranny’s Blue Flag beach, which is ideal for swimmers.
The bay is overlooked by Croagh Patrick, the third highest mountain in Co. Mayo and a well established pilgrimage destination with mass being held at the summit every ‘Reek Sunday’, the last Sunday in July each year. It is customary for pilgrims to scale the mountain in their bare feet though not mandatory! At the foot of the mountain is a visitor’s centre and adjacent to this is the National Famine Memorial, designed by John Behan, which commemorates those who died during the 19th century Irish Famine.
As in much of Co. Mayo, the area around Clew Bay offers a great choice in golf courses ranging from a little 9 hole course at Mulranny to Belmullet Golf Club and Westport Golf Club.
