The near by village of Renards Point has some really excellent traditional pubs and restaurants serving locally caught seafood. Fresh fish can also be purchased daily from the pier at Portmagee. It is from this pier that the ferry for Valentia Island leaves though the island can also be reached but land bridge.

There are regular boats taking visitors out to the Skellig Rocks &ndash Skellig Michael and Small Skellig. The former is a designated World Heritage Site, dating back to 600AD, it was initially a haven for Catholics who were being persecuted at the time. The earliest monastic settlement in Ireland was built here with 670 steps leading from the rock&rsquos small harbour to St. Fionan&rsquos Monastery. The monks left in the 13th century and the rock became a destination for pilgrims, the hive like buildings of the monastery are still standing and today, a popular visitor attraction.  The smaller of the two rocks has the world&rsquos second largest colony of genets and is also home to a large variety of other seabirds including the puffin, arctic turn, black guillemot, herring gull, razorbill, fulmar, manx shearwater and cormorant.
